Volleyball: Duke defeats Virginia in three sets

The Virginia volleyball team dropped its second ACC contest of the season to Duke, 25-12, 25-21, 25-18, at Cameron Indoor Stadium Sunday afternoon.

The Cavaliers (7-5, 0-2 ACC) struggled offensively, hitting just .029 while the Blue Devils hit .231. Duke also tallied five aces in contrast to UVA, which did not register a single point from behind the service line.

Set 1: Duke 25, Virginia 12
The Blue Devils (10-3, 1-1) jumped out to an 8-3 lead early in set No. 1 and kept the Cavaliers at an arm’s length, leading by as many as 12. Virginia was not able to find their footing offensively, hitting just .091 while Duke swung .522. Veresia Yon finished with three kills on four attempts.

Set 2: Duke 25, Virginia 21
The Cavaliers traded points with Duke for a majority of the second set, not allowing the Blue Devils to pull away from them. The Hoos carried momentum late in the set and brought the score within one [20-21], but ultimately fell in a 0-2 deficit after being outscored 4-1. Abby Tadder recorded three kills and a block solo in the second set.

Set 3: Duke 25, Virginia 18
Virginia continued to play Duke close in the final set of the match, going back and forth for a majority of set No. 3. After UVA tied the score at 17 apiece, Duke’s offense exploded on a 7-0 run and outscored the Hoos 8-1 down the stretch to seal their victory.
