Volleyball: Virginia falls in four against Boston College

The Virginia volleyball team fell to Boston College in four sets on Sunday afternoon at Memorial Gymnasium. Milan Gomillion finished with a match high 17 digs while Abby Tadder recorded 10 kills and a block.

Set 1: Boston College 25, Virginia 17
The Cavaliers (8-6, 1-3 ACC) struggled to get any consistent offense going out of the gate, staying within striking distance of Boston College early in the set before the Eagles erupted on multiple scoring bursts. Virginia hit -.031 percent and registered only eight kills in the opening period. Lauryn Bowie led UVA with two kills on five swings (.400).

Set 2: Virginia 25, Boston College 23
Virginia opened up set No. 2 by taking a 9-4 lead before the Eagles quickly closed the gap, going on a 7-1 run and pulling in front of the Cavaliers 11-10. The two sides traded points throughout the rest of the period before knotting up at 23 apiece. Virginia’s Heyli Velasquez fired off two straight service aces to bring the match level 1-1. Brooklyn Borum finished with two kills and two blocks in the second set.

Set 3: Boston College 25, Virginia 19
Boston College (12-6, 1-3) quickly jumped out to a 6-1 lead, but Virginia battled back to a 12-12 tie before the Eagles pulled away after a 5-1 run which kept the Hoos at an arm’s length for the rest of the period. GG Carvacho registered two kills on four swings to go along with a block.

Set 4: Boston College 25, Virginia 19
The Cavaliers fell in a hole early in the final set of the match, trailing the Eagles 4-9 but managed to pull their way back to tie things up 13-13. Virginia brought the final set within two points [18-20], though Boston College outscored the Hoos 5-1 down the stretch to seal the victory. Chloe Wilson finished the closing set with three kills on seven attempts (.429).

MATCH NOTES

  • Virginia continues to lead the all-time series over Boston College 19-10.
  • Virginia was outhit .233-.103.
  • Gomillion led all players in digs (17).
  • Ashley Le (20) and Regan Trueblood (15) each finished with double digit assists.
