Cleary leads UVA to sixth-place finish at Clemson Invitational

The No. 11 Virginia women’s golf team finished sixth at the 18-team Clemson Invitational. The Cavaliers completed their final round Sunday morning following a Saturday weather delay. UVA shot 3-under 285 during its final round for a 54-hole total of 17-over 881. Kent State won the event at 12-under 852.

UVA rebounded during the final two rounds to shoot 1-under after opening with a score of 18-over 306.

Freshman Jennifer Cleary (Wilmington, Del.) led the team in scoring for the first time in her career. She shot 2-under 142 over the final 36 holes to place 13th at 2-over 218. Her final round score of 2-under 70 equaled her best 18-hole total as a collegiate.

Senior Beth Lillie (Fullerton, Calif.) also posted a final-round score of 70 and finished 33rd at 5-over 221. Sophomore Celeste Valinho (Jacksonville, Fla.) was 39th at 223. She also went under par during the final round, shooting 1-under 71.

Junior Riley Smyth (Cary, N.C.) was 45th at 224 and sophomore Virginia Bossi (Como, Italy) was 52nd at 226. Smyth finished with a 74 while Bossi shot 77 over her final 18 holes.

Virginia returns to action April 6-7 when it hosts the Cavalier Match Play tournament at Birdwood Golf Course.
