No. 8 Virginia wins 15-12 at No. 22 James Madison

Two players had hat tricks and nine different players scored a goal as No. 8 Virginia women’s lacrosse (8-2) won 15-12 at No. 22 James Madison (4-3) on Friday afternoon at Sentara Park.

Freshman Morgan Schwab (Fairport, N.Y.) led UVA with four points on three goals and one assist and senior Taylor Regan (Larchmont, N.Y.) had a hat trick. Graduate student Meredith Chapman (Apex, N.C.) had a season-high five ground balls with two caused turnovers. Annie Dyson (Alexandria, Va.) dished out two assists and led UVA with four caused turnovers and four draw controls.

The Cavaliers led in shots (33-27) and ground balls (16-14). JMU had the edge in draw controls (15-14) and saves (11-8). UVA had eight caused turnovers, while committing just ninth turnovers.

Virginia scored first when Mackenzie Hoeg (Mattituck, N.Y.) had a goal on a free position. JMU scored then Regan had a goal with the assist from Schwab. Kiki Shaw (Owings Mills, Md.) ran through the defense to give UVA a 3-1 lead. The teams traded goals, with Annie Dyson (Alexandria, Va.) scoring on the assist from Ashlyn McGovern (Phoenix, Md.), as UVA led 4-2 with 13:25 to go in the first half. JMU had a 5-0 run to lead 7-4. Regan halted the run with her second goal of the afternoon and Maggie Bostain (Richmond, Va.) scored just before the half as UVA trailed 7-6.

Virginia continued its run into the second half, scoring the first five goals. Schwab recorded a hat trick in the run, while Regan and Kloak scored with Dyson recording two assists. JMU scored but Jaime Biskup (Manorville, N.Y.) put UVA back up 12-8 with 17:45 to play. JMU had back-to-back goals to cut it to 12-10. McGovern, with the assist from Chloe Jones (Slingerlands, N.Y.), sparked a 3-0 run by the Cavaliers. Kloak and Shaw added goals to give UVA a 15-10 lead with 4:38 to play. JMU scored the last two goals of the game.
