The No. 12 Virginia women’s lacrosse had two 4-0 runs in the second half to win 16-12 over No. 24 Duke on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon at Klöckner Stadium.

Junior Morgan Schwab scored a career-high five goals and added an assist to lead the Cavaliers (10-4, 5-2 ACC) in the win. Sophomore Rachel Clark scored four goals, including three-straight in UVA’s 4-0 run to open the fourth period. Graduate student Ashlyn McGovern added three goals and had two assists. Six different players scored goals and four had assists for the UVA attack.

The Cavalier defense came up with some big turnovers, forcing 10 of Duke’s 15 turnovers. Junior Maggie Bostain led the team with four caused turnovers with three ground balls. Sophomore goalkeeper Abby Jansen had a team-high four ground balls and grabbed two caused turnovers.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Schwab sparked UVA’s scoring with back-to-back goals to tie it up 2-2 in the first quarter.
  • Sophomore Kate Miller added a goal at the end of the first to tie it 3-3 heading into the second period.
  • The Blue Devils (6-7, 1-6) took a 5-3 lead early in the second, but UVA went on a 3-0 run over two-and-a-half minutes to go up 6-5. Miller and seniors Kiki Shaw and Jaime Biskup scored in the run then Duke added a goal just before the half to tie it 6-6 at the break.
  • Virginia notched its first 4-0 run of the second half and held Duke scoreless for the first 12 minutes of the third period. The run included goals from two goals from Schwab and one from McGovern and Clark.
  • Duke closed the third with three-straight to cut it to 10-9 heading into the last 15 minutes.
  • Clark took control with three consecutive goals in just under three minutes and Schwab found McGovern for a goal as UVA’s second 4-0 run put it up 14-9 with 7:37 to play.
  • McGovern and Schwab scored back-to-back goals to break up Duke’s three goals in the last five minutes.

NOTES

  • McGovern moved into a tie for third all-time with 195 career goals.
  • UVA’s five ACC wins are a program-high in a season.
  • Duke led in shots (33-32), draw controls (17-15) and saves (8-5). UVA had a 10-5 advantage in caused turnovers and both teams finished with 13 ground balls.
  • Junior Aubrey Williams led UVA with eight draw controls and junior Devon Whitaker added five.

“A really important win against a talented Duke team. It is important for our season and important for the ACC. It was a really great team effort. I thought Aubrey Williams and our draw group did a nice job of stabilizing that draw control stat, which is something Duke does really well. To score 16 goals is something that takes a lot of teamwork and to be able to get some defensive stops and turn those into goals at the other end was really fun to watch. I’m proud, excited. We have more work to do with a couple of regular-season games to get it done in. Happy with where we are, happy with the mojo of the team and camaraderie.”
