Women’s Tennis: UVA comes up short against Michigan at ITA Indoors, 4-2

The No. 7 Virginia women’s tennis team suffered a 4-2 loss against No. 12 Michigan in the Round of 16 at the 2023 ITA National Team Indoor Championship being held at the Seattle Tennis Center.
Michigan (5-0) won the doubles point and jumped out to a 3-0 lead before the Cavaliers logged back-to-back victories on courts six and four to make it 3-2. The Wolverines’ Julie Fliegner closed out the match with a victory in the third set on court three.
Virginia (5-1) will face Pepperdine on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. ET in the first of two consolation matches. The Cavaliers will close play on Sunday.
Natasha Subhash and Annabelle Xu opened the match with a 6-0 victory on doubles court two. Michigan countered minutes later with a 6-1 win on the top court and then clinched the point with a 6-4 victory on court three.
Michigan built up a 3-0 lead with straight-set victories on courts one and two. Mélodie Collard put the Cavaliers on the board with a 6-3, 6-3 win against Andrea Cerdan. Xu followed with a 6-4, 7-5 win on court four.
The final two courts split first sets and were in battles in their final sets. Sara Ziodato battled back-and-forth against Fliegner before finally being edged 6-4.
