Working Hard on ‘Team of Destiny’

Happy Easter to all our readers. We thank you for your continued support of our website, which is only nine months old. We are growing each week.

Please excuse our lower than usual story count this week while we finish up our book: “Team of Destiny,” an in-depth look at Virginia’s National Championship season. It is a keepsake that every Wahoo will treasure.

Our book will be loaded with freshly written stories (not reprints from the season) and great photo work from Jon Golden and John Markon. You can pre-order it on our site or buy it from Mincer’s when the book comes out in mid-May.

Starting Monday, we will renew our series on the life of Virginia’s Hall of Fame football coach George Welsh, leading up to next Saturday’s commemoration of Welsh at UVA. Next Saturday’s “Jerry Ratcliffe Show” on ESPN-Charlottesville, leading up to that event, and the spring game that follows, will be full of stories about Welsh.

To get caught up on the first several parts of the series, go to the archives on our site and press football. You can find interesting facts and stories about Welsh from his arrival at Virginia in December of 1981 up through the 1990 season when UVA was No. 1.

Our series will pick up on the 1995 season and go through the end of his career with two special columns at the end, one with daughter, Kate Welsh, who generously spent a couple of hours with us to talk about her dad, and another column of just interesting facts, figures and stories about Welsh’s career that didn’t fit in any of the series stories.

We decided to stop the series when UVA basketball season heated up and resume them closer to next week’s memorial.

Hope you enjoy them.

In the meantime, tune into the radio show this Saturday morning from 9-10 a.m. and catch our interviews with Pete Gillen and Virginia’s newest men’s basketball player, Justin McKoy, who chose the national champion Cavaliers over North Carolina. If you can’t catch the show, the podcast will be up on our site later in the day.
