Led by Abbott, three Cavaliers are taken in first 5 rounds of MLB Draft
By Jerry Ratcliffe
As expected, Monday has been a big day for Virginia baseball. Three players were drafted between rounds two and five, with more expected to go in later rounds.
Leading off the list was right-handed pitcher Andrew Abbott, who was one of the nation’s leaders in strikeouts. Abbott was selected in the second round (the 53rd pick overall) by the Cincinnati Reds.
Obviously, Cincy scouts believe that Abbott could be a potential starter after he showed this season that he can go deep into games. He could also return to the bullpen, particularly with his effective fastball/curveball combination, which would likely get him to the big leagues even faster.
Meanwhile, Zack Gelof, UVA’s third baseball, was also taken in the second round, only seven picks after Abbott (60th) by the Oakland A’s.
The A’s believe Gelof has some of the best raw power of any bat in this year’s draft.
Also, Griff McGarry, who resurrected his career in the postseason, was taken in the fifth round (No. 145 overall) by the Philadelphia Phillies.
McGarry showed great velocity and control and the ability to pitch deep into games during his postseason run, hitting just below 100 mph with his heater.
UVA right-hander Mike Vasil is expected to be the next Cavalier taken.
We will have an update on these selections and more as the day progresses.
