The No. 2 Virginia women’s soccer team (10-1-1, 3-0-1 ACC) and No. 5 North Carolina (8-1-2, 1-1-2 ACC) played to a scoreless draw on Sunday at Dorrance Field. It was the first overtime for the Cavaliers this season and the first draw for Virginia.
HOW IT HAPPENED
North Carolina had the run of play through much of the first half with the Cavalier defense answering the Tar Heel attack as Laurel Ivory made three saves and the Virginia defense withstood 11 shots. The Cavaliers turned the tide in the second half, putting up seven shots to only five by the Tar Heels and the teams were deadlocked with no score after regulation.
The teams would play through both overtime periods with neither side finding the net despite the Tar Heels getting off four shots, while Virginia’s Diana Ordoñez ripped a shot in the second overtime period that was punched clear by Tar Heel keeper Claudia Dickey.
NOTES
- The draw was the fifth all-time in the series between the Cavaliers and the Tar Heels.
- With the draw, Laurel Ivory now has 39 shutouts for her career.
- The 20 shots faced by Ivory was a career high – breaking a mark of 19 set by BYU in the last NCAA Tournament.
- It’s the most shots allowed by the Cavaliers since a scoreless draw at No. 4 Duke on September 29, 2011.
- Though UNC leads the series 39-4-5, the draw moves the series to 4-4-3 in the last 11 matches.
- Virginia is now 23-12-52 in overtime matches under Steve Swanson.
FROM HEAD COACH STEVE SWANSON
“I thought we played well at times today, but not consistently enough to get a win against a team the caliber or UNC. Our effort was good, but we just have to improve our quality in all phases of the game.”
