The No. 7 Virginia field hockey team picked up a 2-1 victory against No. 16 Liberty on Tuesday in Lynchburg. Senior Adele Iacobucci scored the game-winning goal with 4:06 remaining in regulation.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Liberty (9-6) took a 1-0 lead late in the first quarter, scoring on its only penalty corner of the game. The Cavaliers (10-4) tied the game 2:28 into the second quarter. Senior Cato Geusgens and sophomore Noa Boterman passed the ball back and forth to one another after a penalty corner insertion, until Boterman had a clean look at the goal, taking a hard on-target shot to make it 1-1.
The two teams remained knotted at one until the fourth quarter when Iacobucci deflected in a shot by Boterman off a penalty corner to give UVA a 2-1 lead.

FROM HEAD COACH MICHELE MADISON
“Liberty is a very strong defensive corner team. We had opportunities there. The goalie made saves. Field players made saves. And then we had a mix-up on our corner defense and got the goal against us where the post player would normally be an easy ball. But they didn’t back down. They kept going full tilt. They believed they could do it. When you dominate possession, you feel like you can make something happen.”
