Georgetown point guard Harris transfers to Virginia as future Kihei Clark replacement

After attending Virginia’s game against Houston on Saturday afternoon, former Georgetown point guard Dante Harris has committed to the Cavaliers.

Harris has three years of eligibility remaining, and will join UVA’s team for the 2023-24 season.

Harris, who as a freshman was named Most Outstanding Player of the Big East Tournament after leading Georgetown to the championship in 2021, has been away from Patrick Ewing’s program due to “personal issues.” The sophomore entered the NCAA Transfer Portal last week, and visited UVA this weekend.

He is expected to replace fifth-year senior Kihei Clark on next year’s team and join Reece Beekman in Virginia’s backcourt.

When Georgetown added Duquesne point guard Primo Spears through the transfer portal in the offseason, observers pointed to the move as a cause for Harris’ dissatisfaction with his situation in the Hoyas’ program. Ewing also added guards Brandon Murray and Jay Heath, which diminished Harris’ role on the team.

For the 2021-22 season, the 6-foot Harris averaged 11.9 points and 32 minutes per game. He made 37 percent of his field-goal attempts and 27.5 percent of his 3-point attempts in his second year with the Hoyas. Harris, who had a career-high 23 points vs. Creighton, led Georgetown in assists with 118 and was second on the team in steals with 44.
