Swimming & Diving: Seven Hoos in action on Day Four of US Phillips 66 Nationals

Virginia saw seven swimmers in action on night four of the US Phillips 66 Nationals at Indiana University Natatorium on Friday in Indianapolis.

Senior Noah Nichols highlighted the night by breaking a UVA record held by Ed Moses since 2003. Nichols just missed qualifying for the World Championships with a third-place finish in a time of 59.40, nearly a second ahead of the previous record, in the 100-meter breaststroke. It is the second third-place finish of the meet for Nichols.

Sophomore Emma Weber continued her strong week with her best finish at the Nationals, placing fourth in the 100-meter breaststroke. Weber swam a personal-best time of 1:07.39 in the event.

Junior Jack Aikins notched his third top-eight finish, placing eighth in the 100-meter backstroke. Aikins finished with a time of 54.00.

Junior Reilly Tiltmann made the B Final of the women’s 100-meter backstroke, finishing 15th overall with a personal-best time of 1:00.58. Sophomore Zoe Skirboll competed in the 100-meter breaststroke B Final and placed 15th with a time of 1:09.62.

UVA alums Leah Smith and Paige Madden both made the A Final of the women’s 400-meter freestyle. Smith podiumed with a third-place finish in a time of 4:03.85. Madden was fourth in a time of 4:06.78.

IN PRELIMS

  • Sophomore Sophia Knapp finished 39th in the women’s 400-meter freestyle (4:17.68).
  • Senior Anna Keating qualified for the women’s 100-meter breaststroke C Final with a time of 1:10.04 but scratched from the finals.
