UVA will pay $9 million in shooting that killed 3 football players

An attorney representing the family of one of three University of Virginia football players who were murdered in a 2022 campus shooting announced Friday that the school will pay $9 million to the three players’ families and two other students wounded in the incident.

Kimberly Wald, a Miami-based attorney for the Haggard Law Firm, which represents the estate of D’Sean Perry, one of the slain players, confirmed that UVA will pay $2 million each to the families of Perry, Lavel Davis Jr. and Devin Chandler. The school will also pay a total of $3 million to the wounded students, Mike Hollins, who was also a football player, and to student Marlee Morgan, who was on the bus where the shootings took place in November of ‘22.

Christopher Darnell Jones Jr., who was a UVA student and was part of the field trip returning from Washington, D.C., along with the players and Morgan, will go on trial for the shootings in January. He was originally charged with second-degree murder, which has been upgraded to aggravated murder.
