The No. 21 Virginia women’s tennis team picked up its second win of the weekend with a 4-1 defeat of No. 59 Georgia Tech on Saturday at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex in Atlanta.
No. 3 Vivian Yang and Annabelle Xu earned a 6-2 win on the top doubles court, but the Yellow Jackets (7-7, 3-3ACC) ultimately got on the board first after wins on courts two and three.
No. 96 Martina Genis Salas, a sophomore from Spain, came into the weekend with a four-match losing streak and hadn’t competed in singles since the Feb. 8 ITA Indoors matchup against Northwestern. In her return to the lineup in Friday’s 4-1 victory at No. 18 Clemson, she posted a 6-2, 6-3 win on four and, on Saturday afternoon, she sealed her bounce-back weekend with a 6-4, 6-1 victory on five to put the Hoos (11-4, 4-0) on the board. Genis Salas was the only Cavalier to notch her win in straight sets.
Freshman Kaitlyn Rolls finished next, recovering from a dropped second set to win 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 at four and give Virginia a 2-1 advantage. No. 70 Vivian Yang did the same on the top court, expanding the Hoos’ lead to 3-1 with her 6-4, 3-6, 6-0 victory. And finally, for the second time this weekend, fifth-year Melodie Collard clinched the match victory for the Cavaliers with her 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 win on six.
