ACC Network debuts “We’re No. 1” documentary of UVA, Georgia Tech

By Jerry Ratcliffe

If you lived through the peaks and valleys of the 1990 Virginia football season, the Cavaliers’ improbable climb to the nation’s No. 1 ranking and its gut-wrenching defeat to Georgia Tech, then you can relive it again.

The ACC Network will debut a documentary on the 1990 season, with “We’re #1!,” chronicling the league’s season at 7 p.m.  It’s an hour-long show, displaying highlights of the league teams that season but focusing primarily on Virginia and Georgia Tech.

If you’re too young to have witnessed Virginia’s unforgettable season, this will provide a good education on what that team meant and still means to Wahoo fans throughout the decades.

There will be footage from the UVA vs. Georgia Tech showdown, including how the game was in jeopardy due to pranksters setting the Scott Stadium astroturf on fire the night before the game, the drama of the game itself and the outcome.

The late, great Atlanta Journal-Constitution sportswriter Furman Bisher, who covered college football from 1950 until 2011, said the Virginia-Georgia Tech game was the greatest college football game he had ever witnessed. It would be hard to argue because of the degree of play by both teams in the hard-fought, thriller-diller.

Georgia Tech upset undefeated and No. 1 Virginia, 41-38, on a last-second field goal and went on to win a split national title.

The documentary will also feature a roundtable discussion with UVA’s Shawn Moore, Chris Slade and Terry Kirby, along with Georgia Tech’s Marco COleman, Shawn Jones, Scott Sisson and Ken Swilling at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta.

There might even be a cameo or two by yours truly, so tune in and enjoy.
