Cavaliers travel to face Virginia Tech Saturday

Virginia men's and women's divingThe Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will travel to Christiansburg to face Virginia Tech in a dual meet on Saturday at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center. Events will begin at 1 p.m.

In the Rankings

The Cavalier women enter the weekend ranked third in the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America’s (CSCAA) latest poll, while the men are ranked 15th. Virginia Tech is ranked 24th on the men’s side.

Head-to-Head Battles

  • Virginia is 2-1 in dual meet action on both sides of competition this season. Both the teams suffered a loss to Tennessee but topped Wisconsin and Auburn in head-to-head battles.
  • Under Todd DeSorbo, the Cavalier women are 2-0 against the Hokies, while the men’s team has split its last two meetings.
  • The Cavaliers swept last year’s matchup. Sydney Dusel set the Aquatic and Fitness Center 3m board record, tying with former teammate Kylie Towbin (Class of 2019) for the record at the meet.

Last Time Out

  • The Cavaliers captured an impressive win against Auburn on Jan. 4, defeating the No. 14 Auburn women 253-195 and the No. 23 Tiger men 235-213. The Virginia divers competed at the Tennessee Diving Invitational but had their preliminary round scores from the 1m and 3m boards added to the team’s dual meet against the Tigers.
  • Dusel, sophomore Walker Creedon and freshman Kate Douglass earned ACC Performer of the Week honors for their efforts over the weekend.
  • Dusel finished second on both the women’s 1m and 3m board as Creedon topped the men’s platform at the diving invitational.
  • Douglass captured three individual first-place finishes and won with two relay teams to lead the Cavaliers at Auburn. Additionally, she set a UVA long course record in the 50-meter freestyle.

Pacing the Pool

  • Douglass and junior Paige Madden lead the team this season as both athletes rank in the top-five nationally in four events.
  • Douglass holds the fastest time nationally in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:06.19). She also ranks second in the 200-yard individual medley (1:52.84) and fourth in the 50-yard freestyle (21.53) and 100-yard butterfly (50.30).
  • Madden leads the nation in the 500-yard freestyle (4:34.64) while ranking fourth in the 200-yard freestyle (1:43.52) and fifth in both the 1650-yard freestyle (15:58.25) and 200-yard backstroke (1:51.28).
  • On the men’s side, sophomore Casey Storch ranks eighth nationally in the 400-yard individual medley (3:44.43).
  • Virginia Tech is led by Antani Ivanov, who ranks ninth in the 200-yard butterfly (1:42.34).
