Cavaliers trio garners United Soccer Coaches All-Region honors

Three members of the Virginia women’s soccer team earned All-Region honors from the United Soccer Coaches.
Junior forward Alexa Spaanstra (Brighton, Mich.), sophomore forward Diana Ordoñez (Prosper, Texas) and freshman midfielder Lia Godfrey (Fleming Island, Fla.) all earned first-team honors from the coaches organization.
The teams are voted on by coaches in their respective divisions. Virginia is in the Atlantic Region which only had a first and second team this year. All three players are eligible for All-America honors which will be announced on Thursday (May 13).
Spaanstra earns All-Region honors for the second time in her career after earning first-team honors as a freshman in 2018. She earned All-ACC first team honors and has helped the Cavaliers advance to the College Cup with 10 goals and a pair of assists for 22 points on the year. She notched a brace in the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament for Virginia giving her three braces for the season. The 10 goals is second on the team.
Ordoñez earns All-Region honors for the first time in her career as she leads the Cavaliers with 12 goals and five assists for a team-leading 29 points. She tallied a hat trick in the Cavaliers’ 3-0 win over Rice in the Sweet 16 to mark her second hat trick of the season. She also tallied a hat trick in Virginia’s win over Louisville in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament in the fall. She was also an All-ACC second team selection.
Godfrey was named the ACC Freshman of the Year and an All-ACC second team selection in the fall. She has tallied 17 points as she has four goals and a team-leading nine assists. The nine assists this season is also tops in the ACC at the time of announcement. Godfrey has assisted on four game-winning goals and hit the game-winner against George Mason to start the spring portion of the schedule. Her most recent assist came on the game-winning goal against fourth-seeded TCU to push Virginia into the College Cup.
Virginia will face off against top-ranked and top-seeded Florida State in the College Cup at 6 p.m. on Sunday as the season continues for the Cavaliers. Virginia is making its fourth appearance in the semifinals all time and third under head coach Steve Swanson.
