World Hall of Fame golfer Davis Love III’s house at St. Simons Island, Ga., burned down last week in an early-morning fire that could not be controlled.

Love, who was hired two years ago to redesign the University of Virginia’s Birdwood Golf Course, said that no one in the house was injured and that his family was safe from the blaze.

“While everyone in our family is saddened at the loss of our home that was filled with so much laughter and incredible memories, we’re very blessed that everyone is safe and unharmed,” Love said in a released statement.

According to fire chief R.K. Jordan, his department dispatched 16 firefighters to the scene of the blaze at 5:18 the morning, and the firemen arrived five minutes after the caller reported the emergency. Jordan said the two-story home was fully engulfed.

Love, who plays on both the PGA and Legends Tour and is a two-time U.S. Ryder Cup captain, came to Charlottesville two summers ago when UVA announced it had hired him to redesign Birdwood, home of the Cavaliers men’s and women’s golf teams and part of the UVA Foundation’s Boar’s Head Resort.

The project is expected to be completed for a summer opening. No date has been announced for the opening.

Love was fresh off a U.S. Ryder Cup win when he arrived at Boar’s Head for the announcement and he brought along the Ryder Cup trophy for UVA golf enthusiasts to see.

Love is one of the most prominent residents at Sea Island, part of the Golden Isles located less than an hour from the Georgia-Florida border. Several PGA Tour players own homes on the island.
