uva field hockeyThe No. 13 Virginia field hockey team (5-10, 0-3 ACC) suffered a 3-2 overtime loss at No. 11 Wake Forest (5-9, 2-1 ACC) on Saturday in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Sophomore striker Laura Janssen (Nijmegen, Netherlands) tied the game with 1:11 remaining in regulation, but the Demon Deacons scored their golden goal 7:58 into the extra period.

The Cavaliers got on the scoreboard in the final minute of the first quarter, scoring on a penalty corner. Junior back Amber Ezechiels (Niew-Vannep, Netherlands) smashed a shot from the top of the circle that was deflected in by sophomore midfielder Adele Iacobucci (Malvern, Pa.) to give UVA the 1-0 advantage.

The Cavaliers only held the lead for less than three minutes as Wake Forest answered with a goal in the first two minutes of the second quarter. The Demon Deacons added a second goal five minutes later to make it a 2-1 game. Wake had a penalty stroke awarded right before the end of the first half, but the attempt was no good, as UVA held on to the one-goal deficit.

The 2-1 score held until the 58:49 mark of the game when junior midfielder Annie McDonough (Kennett Square, Pa.) dribbled through traffic and along the baseline, finding Janssen at the corner of the net to knock in the game-tying shot.

Hannah Maxwell scored the game-winner, with a shot deflecting off Virginia’s goalie’s pads into the net.
