Former UVA QB Perkins impresses Rams coaching staff

It will come as no surprise to Virginia fans that former Cavalier quarterback Bryce Perkins’ mobility has impressed the L.A. Rams coaching staff.
Perkins is fighting for a roster spot after signing as an undrafted free agent, and has already gained ground in the battle for the backup spot behind starter Jared Goff.
When the Rams waived quarterback Josh Love this week, that made way for Perkins to get more reps in practice. Basically it’s Perkins and former Wake Forest quarterback John Wolford fighting for the backup position, but L.A. could keep both if it decides to keep three quarterbacks on the roster.
Certainly, Perkins’ mobility was a factor in the Rams’ decision.
“Yeah, I think so,” said L.A. head coach Sean McVay. “Bryce has done a nice job. He’s earned the right to be able to get a couple more reps and for us to evaluate him. But, certainly, any time that you can create off-schedule and be able to do some things that aren’t within the design of the play is a very good quality you like from quarterbacks.”
Both Perkins and Wolford have that ability, while Goff is not the most mobile of quarterbacks.
Perkins exhibited his ability to move and create at Virginia where he became the school’s all-time total offense record holder in just two seasons. He rushed 439 times for 1,692 yards and 20 touchdowns. He also passed for 47 TDs, often using his mobility to keep plays alive.
Since his high school days in Arizona, Perkins has worked with former NFL quarterback Dan Manucci, and Manucci believes his protégé will continue to impress McVay and the Rams’ staff.
“For Bryce, when you look at him, he’s always had a determination to be the best quarterback and fight the ‘athlete moniker,’” Manucci said. “He’s a quarterback who happens to be a great athlete. He proved what a great quarterback he is at Virginia, especially last year. He looks to throw more before he runs and that’s attractive to NFL guys.”
