Former Wahoo Yarbrough Needs Your Help
By Jerry Ratcliffe
Wahoo Nation, one of your own needs help, and we are helping spread the word.
Zac Yarbrough, who played for Al Groh’s Virginia teams from 2001 through 2004, is fighting cancer, and his great wife, Kelli, is asking for assistance. We will provide a link for their GoFundMe page elsewhere in this article, but first, in Kelli’s own words, here is their story:
“As many of you know, this July we were hit with the scary diagnosis nobody wants to hear. The dreaded “C” word. Zac was diagnosed with breast cancer, which in men is only 1% of breast cancer cases.
“To say it caught us off guard is a huge understatement. What we thought might be a fatty tumor or simply a swollen gland turned into a life-changing diagnosis. He had a full mastectomy on July 19th with the removal of several affected lymph nodes under the left arm as well. With the lymph nodes being affected, which leads to a high-risk for reoccurrence, they are treating it very aggressively.
“Zac will be undergoing 16 rounds of chemotherapy followed by radiation. It will be a long road but a successful one. We are mentally ready to fight. And we have an amazing support system for which we are truly thankful. What we weren’t prepared for was the financial burden this would bring. We both have great jobs and I carry the insurance for our family, but it only goes so far. With the amount of treatment needed, we are able to afford a certain amount above what insurance has been able to cover.
“It’s never easy (nor fun) to ask for help or financial support. I honestly never believed we would be in the situation to need to do so. But cancer is not easy on you in any way. Not physically, mentally, emotionally, or financially.
“Someone close to me asked a couple of weeks ago about doing a GoFundMe to help and I brushed it off because we really wanted to try to figure this out. But the bills kept coming and she gave some wise advice that forced me to put my pride aside. “There’s a Grace in receiving.”
