Goetz and Rodesch win ITA All-American consolation doubles title

Virginia men’s tennis senior Ryan Goetz and sophomore Chris Rodesch won the consolation doubles title at the ITA All-American Championships on Sunday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla. Rodesch was also the runner-up in the consolation singles bracket.

Rodesch began singles play in the qualifying bracket on Monday, Oct. 4, winning three matches to earn a spot in the 64-player main draw of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s first national tournament of the year. Goetz and Rodesch also advanced through qualifying to earn a place in the doubles draw. Goetz was one of 48 automatic qualifiers for the singles’ main draw.

Goetz faced No. 20 Matej Vocel of Ohio State in the opening round of the singles main draw, downing the Buckeye 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 to move on to the second round. He fell 6-4, 6-2 against Clement Chidekh of Washington on Thursday in the Round of 32 to end his run in singles.

Rodesch lost against No. 23 Hamish Stewart of Georgia in the first round of the singles main draw to fall into the consolation bracket. He topped Luca Maldoner of Old Dominion 6-4, 6-2 on Thursday morning. On Friday, Rodesch won two matches in straight sets, including topping No. 14 Andy Andrade of Florida 6-2, 6-4 to advance to the consolation semifinals. On Saturday, Rodesch topped Karl Poling of Princeton 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 to earn his spot in the final where he faced Goetz’s first-round opponent, No. 20 Matej Vocel of Ohio State on Sunday morning. Vocel and Rodesch battled through three tight sets, but the Buckeye came out on the winning side of a 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 battle.

Rodesch and Goetz were the No. 7 seed in the qualifying doubles draw. They won three matches to qualify for the main draw, but lost their first-round match 6-3, 6-2 against Justin Boulais and James Trotter of Ohio State, dropping down into the consolation bracket. In consolation doubles, Rodesch and Goetz rebounded with a 6-4, 7-5 victory against the tournament’s top seeds, No. 3 Bogdan Pavel and Trey Hilderbrand of UCF. They advanced to the consolation semifinals with a 6-2, 6-2 win against Herman Hoeyeraal and Filip Malbasic of Arizona. On Saturday, they battled the No. 9 team from Duke through two sets decided by tiebreakers, dropping the first but winning the second. They won the third-set super tiebreaker 10-6 to advance to Sunday’s consolation final where they dropped their first set, but won the second 7-5 to force a third-set super tiebreaker which they won 11-9 to seal their victory.

Between doubles and singles matches in qualifying and the main draw, Rodesch played 17 matches over the course of seven days, going 7-2 in singles and 7-1 in doubles.
