Virginia baseball lefthanded pitcher Brian Gursky has signed a free agent contract with the New York Mets. It marks the third Cavalier to sign as a free agent this summer after RHP Will Geerdes and INF/RHP Devin Ortiz both inked deals with the San Diego Padres.
Gursky served as a weekend starter for the Cavaliers after transferring to UVA from the University of Southern California prior to the 2022 season. He went on to set career-highs in every pitching category this season and led Virginia in wins (7) and strikeouts (84). He earned Second Team All-ACC honors as a starting pitcher and a spot on the league’s ACC All-Academic Team.
The lefthander recorded a win in his first five starts of the season, the seventh Cavalier hurler since 2000 and the first since Adam Haseley in 2016 to record a win in his first five starts of the year. He posted a 7-3 mark overall and was 4-1 in ACC play, recording league wins over Boston College, Pitt, Duke and Virginia Tech. Gursky ranked in the top-20 in the league in wins (8th – 7), strikeouts (13th – 84), ERA (15th – 3.97), opponent batting average (17th – .256) and innings pitched (20th – 70.1).
In addition to the free agent signings, four Cavaliers were drafted in the 2022 MLB Draft earlier this month and have signed with their respective organizations – LHP Nate Savino (3rd Round – Diamondbacks), LHP Brandon Neeck (9th Round – Dodgers), OF Chris Newell (13th round – Dodgers) and RHP Matt Wyatt (20th Round – Rays).
