‘Hoos News: Visit The ESPN College GameDay Bus

Fans can hop aboard the ESPN College GameDay bus at State Farm Agent Gary Albert’s office Thursday afternoon.

In advance of the ESPN College GameDay Covered by State Farm show and the Duke at Virginia game on Saturday, Charlottesville State Farm Agent Gary Albert will host an event featuring the ESPN College GameDay Bus later today.

Albert’s event, which is free and open to the public, will be located at his State Farm agency office, 1380 Rio Road East, on Thursday from 2-5 p.m.

The GameDay bus, which will be open for guests to tour, features lounges with leather sofas and reclining captain’s chairs, a galley kitchen and rest room. The bus has seven HD televisions in the front, a rear lounge and five receivers in the rear lounge so the GameDay team can watch five different games at once in order to collect information for their shows.

ESPN College GameDay commentators Rece Davis, Jay Bilas, Seth Greenberg and Jay Williams, along with the production staff, use the bus for planning and preparation sessions and to relax between the Saturday morning show and evening telecasts. The bus travels throughout the country and stops at all eight of the College GameDay sites. Please note, the commentators will not be present during Thursday’s event.

UVA Quartet Named to Preseason All-ACC Team

uva women’s lacrosseVirginia women’s lacrosse had four players selected to the Preseason All-ACC Teams, the conference office announced on Wednesday.

Senior midfielder Maggie Jackson and senior defender Kaitlin Luzik were named to the Preseason All-ACC for the second consecutive year. Senior Avery Shoemaker and junior Sammy Mueller were named to the At-Large team.

Jackson (Alexandria), an All-American, tied the a UVA single-season record with 97 draw controls in 2018. Jackson currently ranks third all-time with 207 career draws. She was second on the team with 64 points (32 goals, 32 assists) and led with 52 ground balls.

Luzik (Alexandria) is a two-time All-ACC selection. The defender paced UVA with 35 caused turnovers and was second with 46 ground balls. She had a caused turnover in all but two games in 2018 and had three or more ground balls in 10 contests.

Shoemaker (Wyndmoor, Pa.) emerged as a scoring threat, finishing third last season with 51 goals. An All-ACC and All-Region selection, Shoemaker scored multiple goals in 16 games, with 10 of those being hat tricks. She also added 15 ground balls and 12 draw controls.

Mueller (Pelham, N.Y.) earned third team All-America honors as a sophomore after leading UVA with 74 points on 59 goals and 15 assists. Mueller’s 59 goals is tied for ninth all-time in a single season. Mueller also added 81 draw controls, 34 ground balls and 15 caused turnovers.

Virginia was selected to finish fourth in the ACC Preseason Poll, behind No. 1 Boston College, No. 2 North Carolina and No. 3 Virginia Tech. The Cavaliers enter the season ranked No. 16 in the IWLCA Coaches Poll and the Inside Lacrosse Media Poll.

UVA opens the season on Saturday, as it hosts No. 13 Navy at 1 p.m. at Klöckner Stadium.

Foster Named ACC Field Performer of the Week

Virginia track and field junior Brenton Foster was named the ACC Field Performer of the Week the league office announced on Wednesday.

Foster (Townsville, Australia) finished first at the Liberty Flames Invite in the high jump, clearing a height of 2.21m (7’3”). The performance tied UVA’s high jump record set by Herman Moore in 1990 and set a Liberty Indoor Track Complex record.

In addition to winning the event, Foster’s performance ranks first in the ACC this season and 12th in the NCAA.

Foster and the Cavaliers will return to action on Friday, sending a split squad to the Tiger Paw Invite in Clemson, S.C., and the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa.
