Late goal lifts UNC to 2-1 win over Cavaliers

The Virginia field hockey team closed out a two-game series at North Carolina on Monday with a 2-1 loss to the Tar Heels in a non-conference match. The Cavaliers (3-3, 2-1 ACC) also suffered a 5-1 loss to the Heels on Sunday in a match that counted in the conference standings.
North Carolina (4-1, 2-1) held a 1-0 lead Monday until freshman midfielder Anneloes Knol tied the game with two minutes remaining in the third quarter. UNC’s Meredith Sholder scored the game winner with 8:19 remaining in the contest.
North Carolina scored on its very first shot of the game, taking a 1-0 lead 3:52 into the contest. Junior goalkeeper Lauren Hausheer made six saves in the period to keep it at a 1-0 deficit. UNC’s Erin Matson was awarded a penalty stroke with 46 seconds left in the half, but missed it wide right, sending the two teams into the break with the 1-0 margin intact.
Knol scored an equalizer with two minutes remaining in the third quarter, dribbling around defenders and firing off a hard shot from the top of the circle that rifled past the Tar Heel keeper. Six minutes into the fourth quarter, the Tar Heels retook the lead on the shot by Sholder.
Virginia pulled its keeper with 3:04 remaining in the game to pick up an extra attacker, but the Carolina defense kept the Cavaliers from taking a shot, preserving the one-goal victory.
The Hoos travel to face Boston College Sunday at Noon on ACC Network.

- Knol’s goal was the first of her collegiate career. She is the first UVA freshman to score a goal this season
- Hausheer finished the game with seven saves, one shy of matching her career high
- UNC outshot Virginia 10-1 in the first half and held an overall 15-4 edge in shots in the game
