No. 4 Virginia wins 5-2 at No. 13 Wake Forest

The No. 4 Virginia men’s tennis team (9-2, 3-0 ACC) picked up its second win over a ranked opponent this weekend when it defeated No. 13 Wake Forest (11-3, 3-1 ACC) by a 5-2 score on Sunday (Feb. 28) in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Virginia won the doubles point and built up a 5-0 lead before Wake recorded its first point.
Grad student Carl Söderlund (Stockholm, Sweden) and junior William Woodall (Washington, D.C.) cruised to a 6-1 win on the top doubles court to begin the match. Freshmen Jeffrey von der Schulenburg (Zurich, Switzerland) and Iñaki Montes (Pamplona, Spain) clinched the point with a 6-3 win on court three.
In singles, Söderlund, Montes and von der Schulenburg won in straight sets on the top three courts to clinch the victory for the Cavaliers. Junior Ryan Goetz (Greenlawn, N.Y.) added a 7-6 (1), 6-1 victory over Filippo Moroni on court five to push the Cavaliers out to a 5-0 lead. The Deacons won third-set super tiebreakers on courts four and six to earn their two points.
