According to a national sports site, Miami starting quarterback Tyler Van Dyke will not play against Virginia this Saturday, but Hurricanes’ coach Mario Cristobol said he won’t announce a decision until late Thursday or late Friday.

Van Dyke, the ACC’s 2021 Rookie of the Year, suffered an injury to his throwing shoulder after a Duke sack in the second quarter last weekend and did not return.

On3’s CaneSport reported Wednesday that Van Dyke is out this Saturday and also out for Miami’s game against rival Florida State the following week.

During a Zoom interview on Wednesday, Cristobol said that Van Dyke has improved.

“The status [for Virginia] is still unknown and we will determine that a little bit later,” Cristobol said. “Jake [Garcia] has practiced really well so we feel confident obviously in the room. We’ll have an update by Friday, closer to game time.”

Garcia took over after Van Dyke was injured in the Duke game and threw three interceptions and fumbled twice. He has played in four games and thrown for 470 yards and a pair of touchdowns, completing 65 percent of his passes.

“Tyler has practiced very little,” Cristobol said. “Jake has taken a lot of the reps. Jaciurri [Brown] has taken a bunch of reps. Peyton Matocha has taken a good amount of reps as well. We’re preparing everybody.”

Miami (3-4, 1-2) is a 2.5-point favorite by Vegas Insiders over host Virginia (3-4, 1-3) for the 12:30 p.m. kickoff in Charlottesville (Regional Sports Network).
