Former UVA shooting guard Casey Morsell announced that he’s staying in the Atlantic Coast Conference and will be transferring to NC State.

The 6-foot-3, 196-pound native of Fort Washington, Maryland, made the announcement from his Twitter account Friday afternoon, along with a generated photo of himself in a Wolfpack uniform.

Morsell was part of the Virginia class that followed the program’s first national championship and departure of De’Andre Hunter, Ty Jerome and Kyle Guy. A lot was expected of Morsell, a 4-star recruit from St. John’s College HS, upon his arrival in Charlottesville, and he received a ton of playing time as a true freshman.

The fact that Morsell was a pretty solid defender helped keep him on the floor for Tony Bennett, as he struggled with his shot and his confidence on the offensive end throughout his first college season and beyond.

Morsell lost his starting job to Reece Beekman this past season, and saw his minutes-per-game average slip from 21.8 in 2019-20 to just 13.9 in 2020-21.

Over his Cavalier career, Morsell averaged 3.8 points (30 percent FG, 18 percent from 3-point range) and 1.5 rebounds.

Morsell will have three years of eligibility remaining in Raleigh for his new coach, Kevin Keatts.

As is the case for all transfers, Morsell will be able to play this fall without having to sit out a year, due to the new NCAA guidelines.
