The No. 14 Virginia field hockey team suffered a 2-1 defeat at No. 18 Old Dominion on Sunday at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex in Norfolk. The Cavaliers held a 1-0 lead at halftime, but the Monarchs tied the game in the third quarter and scored the go-ahead goal early in the fourth.

HOW IT HAPPENED

After a battle in the midfield during the first quarter in which neither team managed a shot, both teams fired up their offensives in the second period. Virginia (7-6) broke through on the scoreboard when Laura Janssen picked up a ball in the middle of a scrum in front of the goal and scored to give UVA a 1-0 advantage with 5:43 remaining in the first half.

The Monarchs tied the game with 12:30 remaining in the third quarter when Alix Marien raced through the circle and fired off an in-stride shot that deflected off the goalie’s pads and into the net. ODU (11-3) took the lead when Marien scored off a penalty corner with 11:35 remaining in the game. With 5:16 left on the clock, head coach Michele Madison pulled the UVA goalkeeper to give the Cavaliers an extra attacker. Virginia used the man-advantage to put pressure on the Monarchs, keeping the ball on ODU’s defensive end the remainder of the game, but UVA could not find the net for the equalizer.

NOTES

  • This was the second time this season UVA fell by a 2-1 score against Old Dominion after leading 1-0. ODU won the first meeting of the year by that same tally on Sept. 26 in Charlottesville
  • This was Virginia’s third-straight game losing by a single goal
  • Virginia held a 9-7 edge in shots and 5-3 in corners
  • Tyler Kennedy and Cam MacGillivray each logged three saves
  • Laura Janssen’s goal was her second of the season
  • Annie McDonough had an assist on Janssen’s goal. It was her fourth assist of the season
