The No. 5 Virginia men’s tennis team logged a 4-2 victory at Notre Dame on Friday in the penultimate match of the regular season.
Virginia (17-2, 11-0 ACC) won the doubles point in a tiebreaker ahead of tight singles matches in which four of the six went to a third set. Junior William Woodall (Washington, D.C.) clinched the victory for the Cavaliers.
In doubles, Notre Dame (12-9, 5-5 ACC) held the early advantage after winning 6-2 on court three. The freshmen tandem of Iñaki Montes (Pamplona, Spain) and Jeffrey von der Schulenburg (Zurich, Switzerland) evened things up with a 6-4 win on court two. Woodall and freshman Chris Rodesch (Angelsberg, Luxembourg), playing together for the first time this season, clinched the point by winning a tiebreaker to decide their match on the top court.
Senior Gianni Ross (Chicago, Ill.) gave UVA a 2-0 lead with a straight-set win on singles court four. Notre Dame got on the board with a straight-set win on court one, making it 2-1.
The other four courts all split sets. Montes, playing on court two, had won his first set 6-2, but dropped his second 6-3. He picked up a late break to win the decider 7-5 and put the Cavaliers ahead 3-1. Notre Dame won on court six to make it 3-2. Woodall rebounded from a 7-5 setback in his second set to down Connor Fu 6-2 in the third set to seal the victory for the Cavaliers.
