Perkins Shares Second-Team All-ACC QB Honors With His Teammates

Most any other year, Virginia’s Bryce Perkins would likely be an easy choice for first-team All-ACC quarterback. This year, however, Perkins had the unfortunate experience of competing against Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence, who was second-team last year, and was bumped to first team in voting this time around.
Perkins, a senior, led the ACC in total offense with 3,636 yards, breaking his own Virginia record of 3,603 set last season. Lawrence finished fourth in total offense with 3,253 yards and had less passing yardage (2,870 to Perkins’ 2,949), but Lawrence plays for the No. 3 ranked team in the nation.
The UVA quarterback wasn’t even aware of the honor until just before media interviews Tuesday morning at the McCue Center, having been informed by Coach Bronco Mendenhall.
Instead of being dejected by the news, Perkins was excited.
“It’s a reflection of our team,” the former junior-college All-American QB said. “The second half of the season, we really picked things up as a team. We started 4-0 but the offense wasn’t really clicking then. [The honor] is a testament to how hard the offensive line, receivers and running backs played.
“I received the award, but without them, I might as well have played tennis or some one-on-one sport of that nature.”
The Cavaliers’ quarterback wanted to share his good fortune with the entire offense.
“It’s an award to me, but it’s an award for the team. We’re the second-team ACC offense. The second half of the season, I don’t think many offenses have played as well as we have. It’s an honor to get that award,” Perkins said.
Meanwhile, Perkins’ teammate and fellow senior Joe Reed was the only Cavalier player to earn first-team honors, at both the kickoff return specialist position and all-purpose (receiver/runner/returner). Reed is only the second player in ACC history to pass 3,000 yards in career kickoff returns.
Two UVA players made the third team, linebacker Jordan Mack and safety Joey Blount.
Six Cavaliers were named honorable mention: wide receiver Hasise Dubois, center Olusegun Oluwatimi, defensive end Eli Hanback, linebacker Charles Snowden, linebacker Zane Zandier and kicker Brian Delaney.
The entire All-ACC teams and honorable mention, along with voting points, appear below. A voting panel of 46 media members and the league’s 14 head coaches voted on the teams.
