uva track and fieldWinning is become commonplace for Virginia freshman thrower Claudio Romero (Santiago, Chile), including accolades from Atlantic Coast Conference.

Today the league office announced he is the repeat winner for its Men’s Field Performer of the Week award.

Romero was voted the honor after a stellar performance at last weekend’s Virginia Invitational. He won the shot put competition (18.02m / 59’ 1.5”) for the second time this season and placed second in the discus with the No. 2 throw in the nation. Romero’s best effort was 62.56 meters (205’ 3”). He was only bettered at the meet by former UVA standout Jordan Young who is attempting to make the Canadian Olympic Team.

Romero is the top freshman discus thrower in the nation and his effort improved on the UVA freshman record he already held. His mark ranks No. 2 on Virginia’s all-time performance list.

A week ago, Romero won the ACC award after winning the discus at the Raleigh Relays with a top throw (61.50m / 201-9) that stood at the time as the UVA freshman record.

The Cavaliers are off this weekend before hosting the Virginia Challenge on April 16 and 17 at Lannigan Field.
