UVA men’s lacrosseVirginia men’s lacrosse head coach Lars Tiffany announced that senior short-stick defensive midfielder Grayson Sallade (Lancaster, Pa.), senior attackman Matt Moore (Barnet Valley, Pa. ) and junior defenseman Cade Saustad (Dallas, Texas) have been selected team captains for the 2022 season.

Sallade played in all 18 games in 2021 for UVA’s NCAA Championship team. He was stellar in the NCAA semifinals against North Carolina where he picked up eight ground balls and caused a pair of turnovers. Had four goals and one assist during the season. Had 54 total grounds ball during the season including 14 in NCAA action.

Moore was both an All-American and Scholar All-American in 2021. Named to NCAA all-tournament team after scoring eight goals and assisting on five others. He was instrumental in UVA’s championship game victory against Maryland, tallying four goals and two assists. He scored a total of 33 goals and dished out 34 assists during the season. He became the fifth Cavalier in program history with 100+ goals and 100+ assists in a career during the 2021 season.

Drawing the toughest matchup was routine for Saustad during the 2021 campaign. He guarded four of the five finalists for the Tewaaraton finalists. In the NCAA championship match, he limited Tewaaraton Trophy winner Jared Bernhardt of Maryland to just two goals. He was named a USILA honorable mention All-American and his defensive prowess was recognized by being named to the NCAA all-tournament team.

“Serving others and sacrificing for the betterment of the team define the three men who will be our team captains this year,” Tiffany said. “They have had fantastic role models to look up to during their UVA career, and Grayson Sallade, Matt Moore and Cade Saustad are now prepared to share themselves physically, emotionally and verbally with their own caring and unselfish styles that distinguish them.

“This is a self-aware and reflective trio that truly is willing to provide whatever UVA Lacrosse needs. What I have already witnessed from Grayson, Matt and Cade with our summer reading and discussions makes me even more excited for our future than I already was, and eager to witness their leadership first-hand.”
