UHall Memories Highlight ‘Jerry Ratcliffe Show’

“The Jerry Ratcliffe Show” will feature a tribute to University Hall on Saturday morning, beginning at 9 a.m. on ESPN-Charlottesville, 102.9 FM, 1450 AM, and will include an all-star lineup of former Virginia basketball players.

Ralph Sampson, Barry Parkhill, Bryant Stith, Richard Morgan, and Jeff Jones will all share their favorite memories of UHall, and tell stories about their times at UVA. That lineup includes three of the eight retired numbers in Cavalier program history: Sampson, Parkhill, Stith.

Fans can listen in beginning at 9, right up until the implosion of the storied arena, which is set for approximately 10 a.m.

Sampson, a three-time National Player of the Year, and UVA’s only member of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, is scheduled to push the button to implode the building. Sampson led the Cavaliers to a 50-2 record in the building during his career.

Parkhill is another legendary Wahoo, who thrilled Virginia crowds in the 1970s, and will forever be remembered for beating No. 2 South Carolina on Jan. 11, 1971, with the winning jump shot. Parkhill remains the record-holder for most points in a game by a UVA player (51 points), also in 1971.

Stith is Virginia’s all-time leading scorer, and is now an assistant coach to Jeff Jones at Old Dominion. Jones was a standout point guard for Terry Holland’s teams, including a portion of the Sampson years. Jones went on to become the only UVA player to also become the program’s head coach.

Morgan was a free-wheeling scorer from the Holland years as well, and was known for lighting up the scoreboard, particularly against North Carolina in a game that Wahoo fans will never forget.

For those who miss Saturday morning’s broadcast, a podcast of the show will be posted at JerryRatcliffe.com later in the day.
