UVA battles Central Arkansas in NISC Quarterfinals Tuesday

The Virginia softball team returns to action on Tuesday when the Cavaliers take on Central Arkansas in the quarterfinals of the National Invitational Softball Championship. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m. ET in Fort Collins, Colo.

It is the first-ever meeting between Virginia (28-24) and Central Arkansas (36-20) in softball.

NOTING THE HOOS

  • Virginia (28-24) is hitting at a .254 clip with 42 home runs, 236 runs scored and 209 RBI so far this season
  • Virginia is led at the plate by sophomore catcher Leah Boggs who is hitting at a .294 clip
  • Boggs continues to lead the ACC with 15 runners caught stealing this season and ranks 14th nationally
  • Junior Katie Goldberg is tied for the team lead in home runs with 12 and leads the team in RBI with 38
  • Senior Tori Gilbert has also hit 12 home runs this season after a solo shot in Sunday’s tournament opener
  • Freshman Sarah Coon is second on the team in RBI with 35 after driving in three in the last outing
  • The Cavaliers are fielding at a .974 clip which is third in the ACC and ranks 22nd nationally
  • Sophomore pitcher Madison Harris ranks first in the ACC with six saves and ranks fourth nationally
  • Harris has eight career saves and needs one more to tie the UVA saves mark set by Erin Horn (2003-06)

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE HOOS

  • Virginia is coming off a 10-2 victory in five innings against Bowling Green in its first game at the NISC
  • Katie Goldberg went 3-for-4 at the plate with two home runs and six RBI to lead the UVA offense
  • Included in Goldberg’s hits was a two-run home run to walk off the game in run-rule fashion
  • Virginia hit four home runs in the game as Tori Gilbert and Sarah Coon also homered
  • Coon finished the day with three RBI as she also hit a two-RBI double to help the UVA offense
  • Molly Grube worked 4.0 innings in the circle and allowed only one hit to pick up the victory in her start
