UVA Football releases list of Class of 2021 early signing day recruits

Bronco Mendenhall welcomed in the highest ranked recruiting class of his career Wednesday, when 24 players signed national letters of intent with Virginia.
The class is presently ranks No. 25 in the nation by both 247 Sports and Rivals, while ESPN rates it the 29th-best class in the country. It includes nine signees from the state, the most during Mendenhall’s era at UVA.
Five of the players, including two from the state, received a 4-star rating by at least one of the three national recruiting services. A complete breakdown of the 24 signees, including bios, appears at the end of this story.
“The class shows growth, it shows progress, it shows momentum, it shows direction, it shows continued improvement, and not subtly, but pretty bluntly and boldly, of what’s happening in our program,” Mendenhall said. “So a really positive day for the University of Virginia football program, for these young people, for their families, and for their futures.”
Mendenhall just finished his fifth year at the helm of UVA and his 16th year as a head coach (11 seasons at BYU).
One of the chief criticisms of previous Mendenhall classes at Virginia was a lack of in-state recruits. Not this time around.
“It’s been a point of emphasis since I arrived, even though the numbers haven’t always reflected it,” the coach said. “We start every single year, and have since I’ve been the coach, in-state. It has taken time to gain traction. It’s taken time to build relationships. It’s taken time to build credibility. It’s taken time to establish momentum, but each year it becomes better. This year, the number alone reflects that.”
Virginia had been to three consecutive bowls, including the Orange Bowl to end the 2019 season, and would have certainly gained an invitation to postseason again this year. The team voted to decline a bowl trip after finishing 5-5 in a pandemic-plagued campaign that caused the cancellation of the Florida State game.
Having brought practically the entire BYU staff with him, it has taken time to gain a firmer grasp on recruiting in this part of the country.
“Each year it becomes better, more productive, and this year the number alone certainly reflects that, but that’s not always the case,” Mendenhall said. “Sometimes there are more in-state prospects of quality at the Power 5 level, and sometimes there are less. But what we are finding is that with the consistency of theprogram, the consistency of the direction, it just is over time, and trust is build with time. The needle is moving, the tipping point is arriving, and the swing is starting. This class, I think, is a reflection of that bigger picture narrative.”
Virginia’s class certainly left in-state rival Virginia Tech’s in the dust. The Cavaliers’ class of 2021 recruiting ranking was , 25th, 25th and 29th nationally by the three major services, and fifth in the ACC behind Clemson, Miami, North Carolina and Pittsburgh.
Virginia Tech’s class was 10th in the ACC and No. 43 nationally.
While UVA signed nine from within the Commonwealth’s borders, Tech signed five.
Among Virginia’s nine, were a pair of 4-star recruits (see related story this evening), Bryce Carter, a 6-foot-3, 250-pound defensive lineman from Life Christian Academy in South Chesterfield, and Logan Taylor, a 6-7, 295, offensive lineman from Espiscopal High School. Taylor is from Bridgewater, Nova Scotia.
The other seven in-state signees included two Charlottesville area recruits: 6-4 wide receiver Malachi Fields of Keswick (Monticello High School), who originally committed to Boston College, and Jonas Sanker, a 6-0 defensive back from Charlottesville (The Covenant School).
Other in-staters were: Mike Green, 6-4 linebacker from Williamsburg; James Jackson, a 6-3 linebacker from Pulaski (played at North Cross in Roanoke); Langston Long, a 6-2 linebacker from Woodbridge; Aidan Ryan, a 6-1 defensive back from Fredericksburg; Lorenz Terry, a 6-5 defensive lineman from Sandston via Fork Union Military; and Jay Woolfolk, a 5-11 quarterback from Chesterfield.
Woolfolk was one of two quarterbacks signed in the class, along with Jacob Rodriguez, a standoing from Wichita Falls, Texas.
Rodriguez completed 199 of 344 pass attempts in 2019 for 3,003 yards and 33 touchdowns. He also rushed 149 times for 1,247 yards. His high school produced three top Division I quarterbacks, Blake Szymanski (Baylor), Shavodrick Beaver (Tulsa) and JT Barrett (Ohio State).
Rodriguez was rated a four-star recruit by ESPN.com. His team is currently playing in the Texas 5A D2 division playoffs, one of several UVA signees that are still playing their seasons currently, while several others finished up last week. Ten of the signees did not play high school football this fall due to the pandemic.
Woolfolk’s Benedictine College Prep team did not compete this fall, but he was an all-stater in 2019 when he averaged 184 passing yards and 54 yards rushing per game as a junior. Woolfolk, also an outstanding baseball player, ranked as the No. 35 prospect by Baseball America for the class of ‘21, will also play baseball for Brian O’Connor’s Cavaliers.
Six of the signees plan to enroll in January: Javin Burke, a defensive back from Cleveland, Tenn.; Amaad Foston, a running back from Milledgeville, Ga.; Jackson, Long, Rodriguez and Taylor.
Those are the most early enrollees Mendenhall has had during his time at Virginia.
“Everything seems to be earlier in terms of timetable,” said Mendenhall. “There’s the early signing date. Offers are going to 2022 and 2023 [prospeccts], earlier and earlier, and the whole thing is just moving forward.
“Then this idea of when a player’s or a prospect’s senior season is over, not senior year, what else is there to stay for if football, and college is really want they want to do. So the value of that last semester of high school is being seen each year in a more diminishing capacity.
“Now UVA is not specific to, nor does it embrace mid-year high school or first year arrivals. So, their orientation and the onboarding process at UVA is designed for the summer for all students. I don’t ever want to have football viewed as different, separate, distinct from that, but there’s a different entry point, so we have to create the onboarding, and the programming that does all that.”
The coach said that UVA has allowed the football program to increase those numbers. When he first arrived, he was allowed three early enrollees and because of that success he’s been allowed to expand based on the quality of person and the capability demonstrated.
In terms of “needs” for this class, Mendenhall was fairly satisfied, but also reminded that several senior players expect to return after having been allowed a “free year” of eligibility by the NCAA due to the pandemic, and that he also purposely left for possible transfers.
“I’ve never been able to match exactly what we need versus exactly what we get,” he said. “Sometimes we feel better and sometimes we don’t feel quite as good by a position or two. The volume and quality we needed again, at the offensive line, to sign four … Once you get past three in any given class at offensive line, it’s difficult to maintain the quality and we did that, which is great, which allows consistency for our program.
“The volume and quality we needed in the secondary in signing five, that’s a big task where you need not only quantity but quality.”
Mendenhall said he and his staff are aware the transfer portal and the one-time transfer rule is going to happen, so he’s left some room to address what he sees the team may need through spring and the offseason.
