Virginia has dropped back-to-back games against North Carolina for the first time since 2015 and 2016. The UNC victory is the first in Charlottesville since 2016 and the first for UNC head coach Mack Brown in seven tries.
- The Cavaliers suffered their third ACC loss by three or less points this season. Five of the nine UVA games this season have been decided by a touchdown or less.
- UVA scored on its opening drive for the first time this season, a seven-play, 65-yard drive that took up 4:12 and ended with a Brennan Armstrong rushing touchdown.
- Virginia has lost three-straight home games for the first time since the 2016 season.
- UVA held North Carolina to a field goal in the first quarter and 10 points at halftime, the fewest by the Tar Heels at either break this season. UNC came into the contest as the top scoring offense in the ACC and the sixth-best in the country.
- The five-yard touchdown run by UNC’s Drake Maye in the second quarter was the first offensive touchdown surrendered by Virginia in nine quarters.
- Virginia collected four sacks on the afternoon, the second-most (Miami-5) allowed by North Carolina. UVA has 15 sacks in its last three ACC games.
Player Notes
- Quarterback Brennan Armstrong became the 15th player in ACC football history to reach 10,000 career yards of total offense. He finished the day with 303 yards (232 pass, 71 rush) and now has 10,195 total yards of offense for his career.
- Armstrong rushed for a pair of touchdowns in the contest, a four-yard rush in the first quarter and an eight-yard score in the fourth. It marked the sixth time in his career he’s rushed for multiple touchdowns in a game. His 20 career rushing touchdowns are tied with former teammate Bryce Perkins (2018-19) for the third-most by a quarterback in UVA history.
- Running back Mike Hollins established career-highs in rushing attempts (16) and rushing yards (75) in his first start of the season.
- Tight end Sackett Wood Jr. led the Cavaliers in receiving with a career-high in receptions (6) and yards (94). The 94 yards are the most by a Cavalier tight end since Jelani Woods amassed 122 yards against Illinois on Sept. 11, 2021.
- Nick Jackson passed Anthony Poindexter (1995-98) for 13thplace on UVA’s all-time tackle list. Jackson now has 343 career tackles after nine stops (4 solo, 5 assisted) this afternoon.
- James Jackson and Olasunkonmi Agunloye recorded their first career sacks in the contest. Jackson led the Cavaliers with a career-high 11 tackles. A total of 12 different Cavaliers have been credited with a sack this season.
- Wide receiver Demick Starling and Wood made their first career starts in the contest.
- True freshman Sean Wilson started his second-straight game at wide receiver and caught five passes for 61 yards, the first five catches of his collegiate career.
- Sophomore Ethan Davies made his first career reception, a seven-yard catch in the second quarter.
- Appearing in his second game this season, running back Ronnie Walker Jr. scored his first touchdown of the season and fifth of his career (third at UVA).
