UVA Opens ACC Championships Thursday Afternoon

The No. 23 Virginia women’s tennis team (16-7) opens play at the ACC Championships on Thursday, facing 10th-seeded Notre Dame at 5 p.m. in a second-round match at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C.
Virginia received a first-round bye as the seventh-seeded team in the tournament.

HOW THE HOOS GOT HERE
Virginia earned the first-round bye into Thursday’s second-round action by finishing seventh in the league-standings with an 8-6 mark against ACC competition. Virginia’s started league play with a road victory over then No. 10 Syracuse and its eight victories included three 7-0 shutouts over Pittsburgh, Georgia Tech and Louisville. Virginia also posted wins over Boston College, Clemson, Notre Dame and Virginia Tech.
HOOS IN THE RANKINGS
Virginia enters the ACC Tournament with two players ranked in the latest Oracle/ITA Women’s Rankings. Senior Meghan Kelley is ranked a career-high No. 20 in singles, while freshman Amber O’Dell is ranked No. 106.
In doubles action, the Cavaliers have a pair of teams in the rankings. The pairing of Kelley and freshman Sofia Munera is ranked No. 18, while the duo of O’Dell and junior Chloe Gullickson is ranked No. 52.
In the team rankings, Virginia continues to hold down a spot in the top 25 with a ranking of No. 23 this week.
LAST TIME OUT VS. NOTRE DAME
Virginia faced then No. 50 Notre Dame at home in the regular-season matchup, taking a 5-2 victory over the Irish. The Cavaliers won five-of-six singles matches to take the victory after dropping the doubles point. Munera, Gullickson, junior Hunter Bleser and sophomore Vivian Glozman won the first three singles matches to take the lead before Kelley would clinch the match with the fourth singles win for the Cavaliers.
UP NEXT FOR THE CAVALIERS
With a win on Thursday, Virginia would advance to the quarterfinals on Friday and face second-seeded Duke at 5 p.m. The Blue Devils are currently ranked No. 3 in the latest Oracle/ITA Women’s Rankings.
