The Virginia women’s tennis team opened the fall portion of its schedule by hosting the Wahoowa Invitational tournament Friday through Sunday at the Boar’s Head Sports Club in Charlottesville.

Freshman Elaine Chervinsky won all three of her singles matches over the weekend, wrapping things up with a 6-4, 6-1 victory against NC State’s Sophie Abrams. Senior Sofia Munera also closed out the tournament with a victory, winning a third-set tiebreaker 15-13 to take the win against Alexandra Nielsen of Penn State.

On Saturday, the Cavalier players all won their respective singles and doubles matches. NCAA Singles champion Emma Navarro played her first collegiate match since winning her title, taking her singles match in a third-set super tiebreaker against Old Dominion’s Yuliia Starodubtseva, last year’s Conference USA Player of the Year. Sara Ziodato made her UVA debut by picking up a win against Alesya Yakubovich.

On the opening day of the tournament, freshmen Melodie Collard and Chervinsky both opened their collegiate careers with singles wins. They also partnered for a 6-2 victory over a team from Auburn in doubles.

Virginia will be on the road next weekend in North Carolina, with part of the squad competing at the Spotlight Ranked Tournament in Cary and others at the Kitty Harrison Invitational in Chapel Hill.
