The Virginia men’s soccer team (2-5-1, 0-3-0 ACC) fell 2-0 to North Carolina (5-2-1, 1-2-0 ACC) on Saturday afternoon at Klöckner Stadium.
It was a tight battle in the first half, with UVA taking four shots and UNC’s six.
Freshman Paul Wiese played a ball across to sophomore Leo Afonso, who got a head on it, but the shot went wide for UVA’s first shot of the day.
After a corner kick, senior Daniel Wright collected the loose ball to rip a shot off, but UNC’s goalkeeper came up with the save.
Afonso dribbled the ball into the left side of the box and tipped it back off his defender to find space for a shot.
UVA had a corner kick opportunity in the 52nd minute of the second half. Wiese sent the ball in as senior Oliver Gerbig took a header that went just right of the net.
A fluke handball in the box by UVA gave UNC a penalty kick in the 78th minute that Santiago Herrera put just out of the reach of goalkeeper Holden Brown.
UNC added a goal in the 84th minute from Alex Rose.
