Virginia makes the cut for 5-star combo guard Trevor Keels of Paul VI
By Jerry Ratcliffe
Only one day after 4-star power forward Trey Kaufman included Virginia on his top-5 list of schools, the Cavaliers also made the final-3 list for 5-star combo guard Trevor Keels of Fairfax.
Keels, a 6-foot-5, 210-pound, blue-chipper from Paul VI Catholic, narrowed his list to three: Virginia, Villanova and Duke. The recruit and his family have not revealed a timeline for his final choice.
Should Keels choose the Cavaliers, he would be the highest-rated player to sign with UVA in the Tony Bennett era. He is a lethal scorer, particularly from the 3-point arc, and has plenty of versatility.
Jerry Meyer, the 247Sports director of basketball scouting, produced this scouting report on Keels recently:
“Tremendous physical strength for a shooting guard. Has length as well. Plays a power game but can score from all three levels. Solid ball-handler. Good passer. Has the strength to be a better rebounder. Adequate defender.”
This is what Keels told Brian Snow of 247Sports about UVA and Bennett:
“Coach Bennett is a great guy,” Keels said. “I love Coach Bennett. The relationship we have is great. He has made sure to recruit me personally and that has been really unique. Basically, they are telling me I can go there and be the man and succeed, and I think it could be a very good situation for me.”
Keels, who holds at least 20 major-college offers, officially visited UVA in September of 2019.
On Tuesday, 4-star Kaufman, who hails from Indiana, cut his list to five: Indiana, Virginia, Purdue, North Carolina and Indiana State. Kaufman also did not announce a timeline for a final announcement.
