Virginia makes the cut for Rice transfer guard Trey Murphy III

Virginia basketball has made another final four, this time as a finalist for the services of Rice transfer Trey Murphy III.

Murphy, a 6-foot-8 wing from Durham, N.C., announced Tuesday that he has cut his list of schools to four: Virginia, Villanova, Pitt and Houston. He will have two years of eligibility remaining, but will have to sit out the 2020-21 season unless he is granted a waiver by the NCAA.

As a sophomore, Murphy proved himself as an effective 3-point shooter. He made 39 percent of his shots from behind the arc over his two-year career for the Owls. Also as a sophomore, Murphy averaged 13.7 points and 5.5 rebounds per game.

Pitt coach Jeff Capel has been recruiting Murphy hard ever since the North Carolina native entered the transfer portal.
