Volleyball: Hoos swept by No. 20 Yellow Jackets

The Virginia volleyball team had its three-match ACC win streak snapped on Sunday afternoon after falling to No. 20 Georgia Tech (25-20, 25-16, 25-21) at O’Keefe Gymnasium in Atlanta.

Elayna Duprey paced the Cavalier offense on Sunday collecting 10 kills on 32 swings. Abby Tadder added nine more kills and had a match-high four blocks in the contest.

Georgia Tech’s Larissa Mendes had a match-best 15 kills, while Bianca Bertolino (12 kills, 11 digs) tallied a double-double for the Yellow Jackets.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Set 1: Georgia Tech 25, Virginia 20
In the opening set, the two squads battled back and forth in the opening stages before a 5-0 Georgia Tech run at 15-9 put the Yellow Jackets out front for good. A 4-0 Virginia run, highlighted by a Zooey Dood ace, cut the Yellow Jacket advantage down to 21-19 before Georgia Tech scored four of the final five points to claim the set. The Yellow Jackets (11-4, 3-3 ACC) had 18 kills in the set compared to only 10 for the Cavaliers.

Set 2:  Georgia Tech 25, Virginia 16
Georgia Tech started fast in the second set with a 3-0 run and led by as many as six points. Virginia (14-3, 4-2) got to within three points following a Duprey kill to make it a 16-19 game. Following the Duprey kill, the homestanding Yellow Jackets tallied the final six points of the set.

Set 3: Georgia Tech 25, Virginia 21
The third set featured 13 ties and four lead changes. Neither team led by more than three at any point during the game until back-to-back kills by Georgia Tech pushed the set and the match in the Yellow Jackets’ favor. Four of Duprey’s 10 kills in the final set while Milan Gomillion tallied 10 of her 17 digs in the final frame.

• Virginia is 14-3 (or better) for the first time since 2003, when it won its first 16 matches of the season.
• UVA is off to its first 4-2 start in ACC play since 2006.
• Virginia had its three-match ACC win streak snapped, its longest since 2014.
• UVA also had its three-match ACC sweep streak snapped, its longest since 2006.
• Georgia Tech improved to 43-22 in the all-time series with UVA, which started in 1983.
• Zoey Dood had a match-high two aces to tie her season-best for the second match in a row.
