Women’s notebook: Cavaliers hope to snap three-game skid Sunday against BC

The Virginia women’s basketball team hosts Boston College on Sunday at noon at John Paul Jones Arena, looking to snap a three-game losing streak.

VIRGINIA NOTES

• The Cavaliers (13-4, 2-4 ACC) have dropped their last three games, all against ranked opponents with road losses at No. 9 Virginia Tech and No. 10 NC State and suffering a 70-59 loss at home on Thursday against No. 22 North Carolina
• Virginia held a 48-37 edge in rebounding against the Tar Heels
• Virginia is second in the ACC and 12th in the nation in rebounding margin at plus-10.9
• UVA ranks third in the ACC and 11th in the nation in rebounds per game at 45.4
• The Cavaliers had 16 offensive rebounds in the UNC game, scoring 14 second-chance points. UNC only scored two second-chance points
• Virginia has grabbed 16 O-boards in each of the last two games and is averaging 15.6 per game
• The Cavaliers hit nine 3-pointers against UNC, the fourth time this season they made nine in a game and the first time since a 9-of-25 performance at Penn State (11/30)
• The Cavaliers are second in the ACC and 18th in the nation in 3-point defense, with teams making 25.7 percent of their attempts from beyond the arc. UVA is third in the ACC and 24th in the nation in overall field-goal percentage defense, with teams shooting 35.6 percent
• Sam Brunelle enters the game having scored 995 points in her collegiate career, five shy of reaching the 1,000-point mark. She scored 797 points at Notre Dame and has 198 this season at UVA
• Brunelle went 5 of 7 from 3-point range against the Tar Heels, scoring all fifteen of her points from beyond the arc. It was the fourth time in her career that she made five or more 3-pointers in a game. Her best performance was a 7-of-11 performance at Florida State in her freshman season (3/1/20)
• Brunelle has scored in double figures 12 times this season, including six of the last seven games
• Brunelle also grabbed nine rebounds, her highest tally of the season. It was the first time she has paced the Cavaliers in rebounding
• Taylor Valladay has come off the bench in each of the last two games to score in double figures, including scoring a team-high 16 points against UNC. Valladay is averaging 14.5 points per game in her last two
• Valladay scored in double figures in four of her first five games this season but had only had one another double-digit scoring performance, a 12-point performance at William & Mary (12/7), prior to scoring 13 at NC State
• Valladay scored 10 of her 16 points in the first quarter against UNC
• Kaydan Lawson matched her career high with five assists against UNC. She joins Valladay and Carole Miller as UVA players with five or more assists in a game this season. Valladay has reached that mark six times and Miller twice

SCOUTING BOSTON COLLEGE

• The Eagles (13-6, 3-3) have victories over both NC State and Florida State this season, but dropped an 83-73 home game against Syracuse on Thursday
• The Eagles lead the ACC in forced turnovers at 20.3 per game
• Tania Mair is fourth in the nation with 7.3 assists per game
• Maria Gakdeng is averaging 1.6 blocks per game, ranking fourth in the ACC
• Dontavia Waggoner is eighth in the ACC with 7.7 rebounds per game and leads the team in scoring with 13.7 points per game
• Virginia leads the all-time series 17-6 and has won eight of the last nine meetings. BC picked up a 65-57 victory last season in Chestnut Hill
