Women’s Soccer: No. 14 Virginia falls to No. 16 Notre Dame, 1-0

The No. 14 Virginia women’s soccer team fell in a hard-fought contest with No. 16 Notre Dame on Sunday by a score of 1-0 at Klöckner Stadium.

The game was originally schedule to be played on Saturday night, but was moved to Sunday due to inclement weather in the area.

HOW IT HAPPENED

After a scoreless first half, Notre Dame (7-1-1, 1-0-1 ACC) turned the tables with pressure to start the second half. Grace Restovich played a through ball to Annabelle Chukwu on a run in behind the defense. Chukwu pulled up nine yards out on the left side and sent the ball in across to the back right corner of goal for the score.

ADDITIONAL NOTES

• The series now stands at 7-3-1 in favor of the Hoos and 4-2-1 in games played in Charlottesville.
• Virginia (8-2-0, 1-2-0) out-shot the Irish 15-13 on the afternoon, built on an high-pressure attack early that saw Virginia rattle off nine of the game’s first 10 shots.
• Victoria Safradin tied a career high with six saves on the afternoon.

“It was a disappointing result. We started off really well, but as the game wore on we lost our discipline and lost our quality; the things we were doing well in the first half left us a little bit. Credit to Notre Dame, but we’re also disappointed because we felt this was a missed opportunity. We’ve got plenty of opportunities ahead, but we have to play much more consistent and that’s the biggest thing to take away from this game.”
