Women’s squash: Cavaliers split weekend matches with Chatham, Drexel

The No. 7 women’s squash team fell 6-3 to No. 3 Drexel on Sunday afternoon at the McArthur Squash Center. Emma Jinks put UVA (4-3, 0-1 MASC) on the board first with a 3-0 win at the four position. Olivia Walsh improved to 5-0 on the season with her win at six and Maria Moya won 3-1 at the two position.

It came down to Meagan Best at one and Nicolina Tessitore at eight as the Cavaliers trailed 4-3 with to matches remaining against the Dragons (7-0). Best and Tessitore dropped the first games but came back to win their second. Tessitore won the third game 14-12 to take a 2-1 advantage, but Drexel’s Sanya Vats won the next two games to clinch the match. Best dropped the third but won the fourth 11-9 to force the tiebreaker, eventually falling 11-6.

Three of UVA’s losses came in five-game matches. Along with Tessitore, Lina Tammam fell 3-2 at the three and Maureen Foley fell 3-2 at the seven. Eliza Mills dropped a 3-1 contest and Sydney Maxwell fell 3-0 at five.

The Cavaliers won 9-0 over No. 24 Chatham on Saturday. Nine of UVA’s victories came in straight games. It was the first game back for the women since playing in the first week of December.

Best won 3-0 at the No. 1 position on the ladder. Tammam earned her first victory at the two spot with a 3-0 win. Walsh recorded her fourth win of the season with a 3-1 win at the three.

Tessitore won 3-0 at the No. 4 position. Mills played the five position and earned a 3-0 win. Julia Curran, Griffin Dewey, Erin O’Connor and Caroline Pellegrino rounded out the rest of UVA’s lineup, respectively, as they each earned 3-0 wins.

Nasreen Hashmi won 3-0, dropping just three points, in an exhibition match.
