Women’s Squash: No. 12 Virginia Edged By No. 6 Pennsylvania

The No. 12 Virginia women’s squash team (3-4) fell 5-4 to No. 6 Pennsylvania (5-0) on Sunday (Nov. 18) at Drexel’s Kline & Specter Squash Center.

The Cavaliers opened the match with back-to-back wins in positions nine and eight, respectively. Junior Elle Carroll (New York, N.Y.) defeated Meg Brody in position nine, 11-5, 11-1, 11-6, while sophomore Giovanna Veiga de Almeida (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) topped Margaret Frantz in position eight, 11-7, 11-5, 11-7.

The Quakers tied the score with wins in positions two and four, but a 12-10, 14-12, 11-8 victory from senior Annie Tyson (Flourtown, Pa.) in position six gave the Cavaliers a 3-2 lead.

Pennsylvania responded with wins in positions one, three and five, clinching the match point as junior Sarah Doss (Richmond, Va.) rounded out the day with a 17-15, 11-3, 11-13, 9-11, 11-6 win position seven.

The competition was the third in two days for the Cavaliers against a top-10 opponent, after facing No. 4 Stanford and No. 9 Drexel on Saturday.

Virginia will return to action on Nov. 30, competing against Fordham in Bronx, N.Y.
