No. 6 Cavaliers stay unbeaten at home with 2-1 win over Miami-Ohio

The No. 6 Virginia field hockey team picked up a 2-1 victory against Miami University on Sunday at Turf Field. Virginia is now 7-0 in home games this season and has won its last six overall contests.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Virginia (9-3) got on the scoreboard in the first quarter. Sophomore Taryn Tkachuk fired off a pass to junior Anneloes Knol who scooped up the ball and knocked it into the goal 10:35 into the game.
Freshman Daniela Mendez-Trendler added an insurance goal 10:30 into the second half, weaving her way through the defense and through the circle before firing off an on-target shot. It was Mendez-Trendler’s fifth goal in the last four games.
The RedHawks (7-6) got on the board midway through the fourth quarter when Katherine Groff scored on a shot from the far corner of the goal.

NOTES
- Shots were even at 12 apiece, but Miami held a 9-2 edge in penalty corners with seven coming in the third quarter
- Neither team converted a penalty corner in the game
- Miami’s goalkeeper Isabelle Perese made seven saves
- Jet Trimborn made three saves. She improved to 6-0 this season
- Daniela Mendez-Trendler’s goal was her seventh of the season. She is now tied for the team lead in points with 17
- Anneloes Knol’s goal was her first of the year
