Bronco Not Happy With Lack Of Sharpness During 6th Practice

With historic Lambeth Field as a backdrop, Virginia’s football team finished its sixth practice of fall camp on Thursday. It wasn’t the best. Coach Bronco Mendenhall said he had been pleased with the five previous practices but wasn’t happy with the lack of sharpness. He quickly recognized that the competitiveness in practices building up to Thursday had taken its toll. “The team showed signs of a lot of work,” Mendenhall said. “We have been increasing the work capacity, pushing the limits in every possible way, and it showed today.” The coach plans on having a “significant” scrimmage on Saturday, and […]

New Rules Allow Players To Return After Declaring For Draft

The NCAA announced some significant rule changes today aimed at cleaning up college basketball, and they include such things as allowing a player to return to his college team if they’re not chosen in the NBA draft, and even the ability to sign with an agent if designated an “elite” player. The NCAA on its website listed these five rules changes that also include more official campus visits, a certification program for agents and the requirement that if a player leaves to play professionally but later returns to finish his or her degree, the schools must pay all costs. Here […]

Sometimes, Sports Can End Up Being More Than “Just A Game”

It’s easy to become cynical about sports. It’s equally easy to scoff “it’s just a game.” And then you have a morning like I did today. At 9:30 AM, my cellphone rang. It was a number I didn’t recognize from an area code I couldn’t recall ever seeing. I didn’t answer, assuming it was either Rachel at Credit Card Services telling me of some incredible deal, the IRS saying if I didn’t mail them a check in the next two hours armed agents would be arresting me, or great news about some Disney vacation I’d allegedly just won. But when […]

Why Risk Company’s Brand Just To Recover 27,000 Followers?

If you follow media in the state, you couldn’t help but notice the story that broke this morning where the Roanoke Times decided to sue its former Virginia Tech beat writer – Andy Bitter – because Bitter would not give back his Twitter handle and its 27,000 followers when he left to go work for The Athletic. I read the comments of at least three sportswriters on Twitter this afternoon and they all said this case will be “interesting.” Which they have to say because the chain that owns the Roanoke Times owns most of the newspapers in the state, […]

International Experience Certainly Agreed With Brian O’Connor

Brian O’Connor got a taste of international baseball this summer in a 22-day stint with USA Baseball’s Collegiate National Team. The experience whetted his appetite for more. O’Connor, Virginia’s longtime baseball coach, was the pitching coach on manager Paul Mainieri’s USA team that went 11-3 in series against Chinese Taipei, Japan and Cuba. The USA swept its five-game series against Taipei, won three of five against Japan, and went 3-1 vs. Cuba, with the final game rained out. Brian O’Connor Makes A Visit To The Mound For Team USA Certainly, O’Connor’s pitching staff did its job. The USA arms were […]

Will A True Freshman Be Virginia’s Answer As A Deep Threat?

Scattershooting around Wahoos World, while wondering if a true freshman will be Virginia’s answer as a deep threat … One of Bronco Mendenhall’s chief concerns in training camp is finding a vertical threat to replace Andre Levrone and Doni Dowling. It was a concern in the spring and remains one in August. “We have first-years coming in, Wooby Theork-Youmans (Naples, Fla.), Ugo Obasi (Baltimore, Md.), Billy Kemp (Highland Springs), and Tavares Kelly (Fort Launderdale, Fla.), and possibly (senior) Olamide Zaccheaus [at wide receiver] with one of the other guys playing his position in the slot,” Mendenhall said. “It’s a need […]

Bronco Doesn’t Hold Back About Value Of Perkins, Zaccheaus

As a lifelong sportswriter, I have really come to appreciate Bronco Mendenhall’s candor. Everyone huddled around the Virginia football coach after Friday night’s first practice, hoping to get some kind of scoop on the Cavaliers, got more than they bargained for. Bronco Mendenhall Talks To Reporters Yes, everyone who closely follows UVa’s football team already knew that transfer quarterback Bryce Perkins and speedy slot back Olamide Zaccheaus were going to be huge keys to the Cavaliers season. However, for a coach to come out and say it without hesitation on the first night of practice, well, that just doesn’t happen […]

Is Learning Curve For Virginia’s Football Team Less Of A Burden?

With eight returning starters on offense and eight on defense, is the learning curve for Virginia’s football team less of a burden as Bronco Mendenhall opened his training camp Friday night? Well, yes, and no. “Defensively, especially with eight of the 11 back … and then there’s this pause,” Mendenhall said after the Cavaliers’ first practice. “Without Micah, without Quin, and without who Andrew Brown became, those are still big shoes to fill. “The identity, the chemistry … there’s confidence and experience, but there’s still some uncertainty in who now replaces that production,” Mendenhall explained. “I think it will be […]

Is This Heaven? No, It’s A Full Room Of Virginia Offensive Line

Garett Tujague knows a little something about offensive lines. He started at left guard for LaVell Edwards at Brigham Young, and later became Bronco Mendenhall’s line coach at both BYU and Virginia. When he walked into the Cavaliers’ offensive linemen’s meeting room this week and saw 20 players greeting him, he was in football heaven. “I had to make sure I’m not in a dream,” Tujague (pronounced TOO-Jay) said after Friday night’s opening of UVa’s fall training camp. “It’s nice to have good numbers, good quality kids guys that are all about Bronco and his program, about hard work and […]

Much Will Be Expected Of Applefield This Season On Wahoo OL

On a Virginia offensive line that is thirsting for experience, graduate transfer Marcus Applefield should provide a ton of veteran leadership. The former Rutgers standout, who moves from right guard to right tackle, is settling in nicely in his new role in Charlottesville, and is eager to show his younger teammates the ropes. Marcus Applefield “I’m a big guy, obviously, with experience,” Applefield told reporters Friday. “I can move well on my feet and I’m a strong guy.” It will all take some getting used to, but after Friday’s first fall practice, the 6-foot-5 lineman who started 10 games for […]

For Future Wahoo Casey Morsell, It’s Rise And Grind Every Day

In Washington, D.C.’s hotbed of high school basketball talent – where there are plenty of players to choose from – Virginia chose Casey Morsell. Better yet, Morsell chose Virginia back. Casey Morsell The 6-foot-2, 195-pound combo guard from St. John’s College H.S. continued to separate himself from the crowd over the summer for one reason — he’s addicted to the grind. “I really want to be the best, and I’ll do whatever it takes to be the best,” Morsell said in an interview this week. “Part of it is being addicted to the grind, so all I really do is […]

5 Questions For Wahoos As Bronco Starts 3rd Fall Training Camp

Bronco Mendenhall kicks off his third fall training camp Friday night, hoping to build off last year’s momentum that unexpectedly delivered a bowl trip. The Cavaliers return eight starters on both sides of the ball, in addition to several players who gained valuable playing experience last season when pressed into service due to injuries to starters. Ideally, Mendenhall would like to go bowling again this season and avoid a second half of the season slump that barely allowed his Wahoos to become bowl eligible. The back end of the schedule isn’t quite as loaded as it was last season when […]

Well, Today’s The Day We’ve Been Waiting For

Welcome to a landmark day in the brief history of our website. In a mere five weeks, we have created a new website dedicated to covering University of Virginia athletics in a fashion we believe Wahoo Nation will appreciate. We truly appreciate your support and hope you will help spread the word to all your fellow Hoos. We have transitioned from a startup business and website, which was free during the month of July – perhaps the most challenging month of the year in terms of coverage of collegiate sports – to a pay site beginning today, Aug. 1. Certainly […]

Wahoos Announce Non-Conference Men’s Basketball Schedule

No surprises on Virginia’s men’s nonconference basketball schedule announced Wednesday afternoon, but there will be a renewal of games against old friends. Maryland and South Carolina, the only two schools to ever leave the ACC, are on tap (the Terps at College Park in the Big 10 Challenge), and a game in Columbia against the Gamecocks, the first battle with USC since an NIT matchup against Dave Odom’s team in the NIT in 2002. The Maryland game is set for Nov. 28, five days following the conclusion of UVa’s regular season football schedule at Virginia Tech. Virginia visits South Carolina […]

Orlando, FL Quarterback Becomes 18th 2019 Commitment

Virginia football gained its 18th commitment to the Class of 2019 on Monday, when dual-threat quarterback Robert Harvey, Jr., said he will be a Cavalier. Harvey is a 5-foot-10, 187-pound athlete from Orlando, Fla. (Edgewater H.S.). He had 26 offers. Robert Harvey, Jr. Harvey chose Virginia over Georgia Tech, North Carolina, Central Florida, Syracuse, Appalachian State, and East Carolina among others. He is rated a 3-star prospect by 247Sports. This is what Harvey tweeted out today to announce his decision: “First off I want to thank God for Blessing me with the opportunity to play Football. I want to thank […]

40 Years Ago On This Day, Mike Cubbage Hit For The Cycle

Mike Cubbage (right) with UVA baseball Coach Brian O’Connor during Cubbage’s induction into UVA Hall Of Fame Fasten your seatbelts. We’re stepping into Hootie’s Way Back Machine, and remember that we have to hit 88 mph on the keyboard before the flux capacitor will start. Also, try not to interact with yourself or others as it will upset the space-time continuum … July 27, 1978 Charlottesville native and current resident, Mike Cubbage, known to friends and former baseball players and coaches as “Cubby,” accomplished one of the most rare feats in Major League Baseball. As a member of the Minnesota […]

Summer Workouts End With New Tradition: “Break The Rock”

Director of Football Development & Performance Shawn Griswold encourages a player during the bench press At 5:45 a.m., Charlottesville is still dark and quiet on a sleepy summer morning. All that is about to change at the McCue Center, home of Virginia football. That’s the appointed hour the Cavaliers come rolling in four times a week, but this day – Friday – was special, the beginning of a new tradition. Senior wide receiver Olamide Zaccheaus performs the “Break the Rock” ceremony “Break the Rock,” is an idea that new UVa strength and conditioning coach Shawn Griswold (affectionately tagged “Griz” by […]

This Could Be The Year The Streak With Virginia Tech Ends

One of the great things about walking the hallways of the global headquarters of JerryRatcliffe.com is the opportunity to debate Hootie on the latest story he just wrote. Which was the case last night when he said the Wahoos would definitely not finish last in the Coastal Division of the ACC. I actually agree with that, as North Carolina is a steaming, smoking, dumpster fire destined to spend the year in the league’s basement. But proclaiming Miami the best, saying Boston College was a dark horse, and dismissing Virginia Tech the way most dismiss a telemarketer calling during dinner…those were […]

What Do Writers Know? UVA Will NOT Finish Last In Coastal

I’ve always had a problem with preseason polls. Voters are usually fairly accurate about the top of the polls but after that it’s a crapshoot, and in the case of last week’s ACC Football Kickoff with hundreds of media attending, anyone can vote. By anyone, I mean anyone as in the voter who gave North Carolina a first place vote in the Coastal Division. Really? I totally agree that Miami and Clemson should be the preseason favorites in their respective divisions. Florida State will be interesting with a new coach inheriting a load of talent. Boston College is my darkhorse. […]

If You Notice A Change With Your PayPal Account…

Since apparently some of our emails go into spam folders and don’t get seen, we sent one out last night to all monthly subscribers concerning their recurring PayPal accounts. PayPal won’t let us change the dates on when you get your next bill. So even though we don’t start charging for a subscription until August 1, if you signed up early, Paypal will bill you again 30 days after that date. Which would not be right. The only solution from PayPal was to suspend the recurring payments now, then reactivate them on Sept 1, thus getting everything in sync. That […]
