Tuesday’s “Late Night with Tony Bennett” might have flown under the radar of most college basketball fans, but for Virginia and Notre Dame, it couldn’t have meant more.

As Virginia coach Tony Bennett put it after a hard-fought, grind-it-out, 50-49 overtime win over  Notre Dame Tuesday night at John Paul Jones Arena, “We’ll take it.”

One of the hottest teams in the ACC comes rolling into John Paul Jones Arena tonight, as Notre Dame looks for its first regular-season victory against Virginia since joining the conference.

When Notre Dame visits Virginia tonight (9 p.m.), something’s gotta give. The Fighting Irish have won four in a row, and the Cavaliers had won four in a row until losing a close decision at Louisville this past Saturday.

After beating Louisville nine straight times over the last five years, Virginia lost its mojo over the Cardinals by an 80-73 count at the KFC Yum! Center.

After erasing a 14-point halftime deficit, Virginia fought back to take a two-point lead with 3:25 to play, but No. 5 Louisville made eight of its 10 free-throw attempts over the final three minutes and held on for an 80-73 win Saturday.

Virginia carries its three-game win streak into the KFC Yum! Center Saturday when the Cavaliers go up against fifth-ranked Louisville (4 p.m., ESPN).

The fifth-ranked Florida State Seminoles visit John Paul Jones Arena tonight for their second meeting in 13 days with Virginia, in a Super Tuesday ACC battle (7 p.m., ESPN).

Virginia, one of the worst perimeter shooting teams in the nation, got a surprising lift from junior-college transfer Tomas Woldetensae’s seven 3-pointers to escape Winston-Salem with a 65-63 overtime win.
